This book extends the concept of giving dogs choices beautifully and practically. It even inspired me to let my dear old dog Nick decide where to wander on our walks.

Tess Erngren shared a powerful concept with me that I thoroughly enjoyed—especially the hiking map imagery.

I was surprised at the title of Tess’s article. ‘The Dog is the Boss’ seems counter to popular belief. After the first paragraph about adventures with her dog Ralph, Tess had me hooked.

Beyond Commands

How to Build True Partnership With Your Dog

Have you ever felt that no matter how much training you do, your dog just doesn’t seem fully “with you”? Traditional training often focuses on commands, control, and compliance. But that can leave you with a dog who listens only sometimes – or who shuts down, resists, or struggles in everyday life. Deep down, you might feel something is missing: real cooperation.

When control is the only goal, the relationship becomes one-sided. You may notice your dog ignoring you when distractions are high, or resisting care routines. Training can start to feel like hard work instead of joyful teamwork. The truth is – dogs do have a voice. But if we don’t ask the right questions, we risk building stress instead of trust, frustration instead of connection.

That’s where The Dog is the Boss comes in. In this webinar, you’ll learn four powerful questions that let your dog participate in the conversation: What do you choose? Can you show me? Are you ready? Do you say yes or no? This simple but life-changing framework helps you build cooperation through choice, strengthen trust, and turn everyday routines into a true partnership. You’ll walk away with practical tools, inspiring examples, and a new perspective that makes living and working with your dog easier, more joyful, and more connected.

Who is it for?

  • Trainers looking for a fresh, ethical approach
  • Anyone curious about choice-based living with dogs

About Tess Erngren

I’m Tess Erngren, and I run GoodDog, Norway’s most progressive dog school. For me, dogs are family members — their welfare always comes first. Every course, every lecture, and every project I do is built on ethics and science, because I believe dogs deserve nothing less.
I’ve spent over 20 years teaching dog trainers and behaviour specialists, lecturing internationally, and publishing books including The Puppy Diary and The Dog is the Boss.

My philosophy comes from working with wolves and bears, where control isn’t an option — only choice, respect, and cooperation. That same principle is at the core of how I teach people to live and work with dogs.

When I’m not teaching or writing, I’m with my two rescued Siberian Huskies, Lilith and Boy. Together we spend summers in the Norwegian mountains and winters travelling through Europe. They remind me every day: dogs aren’t here to serve us, but to share life with us.

My mission: helping people and dogs build relationships based on trust, respect, and genuine cooperation. Be your dog's best friend.
